Sight Singing Exercises

A Lot More Occupations Than You Might Think Have Eyesight Restrictions. If You Are Thinking About A Change, It Is A Good Idea To Check Before You Send Your Application

Whilst doing some research for another piece of work and mistyping a search enquiry, I was distracted by various websites discussing how many jobs have eyesight specifications for new recruits so I just had to carry on reading and find out more. I’m certain that most people can list some obvious careers where outstanding sight is critical. For example, the RAF has very strict guidelines about who it will accept for pilot training, and defects will not be tolerated.

Naturally, we would all think that jobs which involve driving or transporting passengers would require a decent level of eyesight, and I’m glad to say that this is completely right. But the thing I found more fascinating was the restrictions imposed for what is and is not satisfactory in terms of corrective lenses or selected surgical operations.

For example, a commercial pilot would not be stopped from looking for a job with an airline if he uses glasses to see clearly, but his vision complaint when not using glasses must be within the guidelines requested by the Civil Aviation Authority and he will have to have regular tests to keep a lookout for any deterioration. If the person has already had Laser eye treatment to correct a vision issue, he may still be considered for the job, but if an eye weakness is found during the first assessment, he could not then opt for Laser eye surgery to cure the defect and then request a certificate to fly. Colour blindness is not acceptable on any occasion for pilots. Air Traffic Control staff are governed by almost identical eyesight guidelines too – it’s comforting to know that those who are flying and landing planes are screened so strictly!

The majority of people are aware of the necessity for drivers to possess that they have a specific range of sight, and for vocational drivers, such as those who possess LGV licences, there are strict health checks undertaken before a licence is issued. Train drivers are also required to meet the same standards of vision and, as with road drivers, this can be accomplished by using prescription glasses or contact lenses.

Drivers on London Underground trains have somewhat more rigid regulations. They are permitted to wear corrective glasses, although there are limits on what type of frames are acceptable as some shapes can restrict peripheral vision, but contact lenses are currently not allowed. As a point of reference, all pairs of sunglasses utilised must be of a style allowed by LU, as they must not interfere with colour vision at signals, and the company must be certain that high visibility clothing used by maintenance workers are always visible. (And yes, some ‘Underground’ lines do also go over ground too – hence the requirement for sunglasses!)

The Police in England and Wales are comparatively lenient, as both corrective glasses and contact lenses can be worn by workers, subject to a few basic eyesight rules being observed. They will also take on applicants who have experienced various types of treatments including cataract surgery and Laser eye surgery, although they will not employ those who have had invasive surgery carried out on the cornea (for example non Laser eye treatments where the cornea is actually incised with a surgical implement) because of the greater risk of damage to the cornea if the officer was to be hit in the face.

It’s evident then, that many jobs do put standards in place requesting minimum vision requirements for potential workers, so it is worth investigating before applying for a new job. And it is also it is worth taking into account if you are thinking about eye treatment some time soon, so that any procedures carried out on your eyes cannot impact on future career opportunites.
